The “Harrods of the Midlands”: What started out as a grocer and provision merchant grew into a sprawling, upscale department store. It was incredibly influential in Leamington’s Edwardian economy, boasting its own massive delivery vehicle fleet, extensive warehouses on Chandos Street, a cafe, and high-end window displays. It famously drew crowds for major national events, such as displaying a massive replica of a royal wedding cake.
Later Legacy: Long after Mr. Burgess’s death, the business continued to thrive as the town’s premier department store. In the late 20th century, the historic store was bought out and transformed into Army & Navy which later became a branch of House of Fraser.
