Lights of Leamington

The Lights of Leamington was a celebrated annual illumination festival held in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Often spoken of as the Midlands’ answer to the famous Blackpool Illuminations, it was a massive post-war attraction that drew millions of visitors.

When They Started

The festival started in 1951. It was launched as part of the nationwide Festival of Britain, with the primary goal of lifting the public’s spirits and celebrating a break from years of post-war austerity and rationing.

When They Finished

The festival ran for ten weeks every year until it finally finished in 1961. Despite its immense popularity and drawing crowds from across the wider Midlands region, the event was ultimately discontinued after the 1961 season due to rising costs and logistical challenges.

What the Festival Was Like

• The Location: Centered in Jephson Gardens, the town’s Victorian park, the event transformed the landscape into a glowing wonderland.

• The Attractions: It featured thousands of coloured lights hung in the trees, illuminated floating musical displays on the park’s lake, massive glowing dioramas (such as replicas of the New York and Venice skylines and the Alps), fireworks, and dancing performances.

• The Scale: Scores of electricians and local authorities (overseen by the East Midlands Electricity Board) worked on the elaborate displays, which also famously incorporated a massive floral clock made of over 10,000 flowers.

Though short-lived, the festival left a massive imprint on the local history of Leamington Spa, inspiring community legacy projects, lantern parades, and major commemorative exhibitions in recent years.
